6-day Umbwe route
The toughest, most direct route on Kilimanjaro, for strong hikers only.
The route at a glance
Umbwe is the hardest route on Kilimanjaro. There is no easy start and no long gradual walk: from day one you go straight up.
It is short, steep and direct, so it is only for strong hikers who are confident they acclimatize quickly. If you can handle it, Umbwe gives you real solitude, with almost nobody on the trail until you join the other routes at Barranco Camp.
You start at Umbwe Gate (1,600 m) on the south side, climb a sharp forested ridge between two rivers to Umbwe Camp, then continue via the Barranco Wall, Karanga and Barafu to Uhuru Peak. No crowds, just you and the mountain.
